How to Become a Health Coach

I was 270 pounds, working a full time 9-5 that was burning me out, and just barely starting to learn what it took to be a physically and mentally healthy. Around that time my mentor and health coach, Heather, said, "I think it's time to start coaching!"

Let me back track a little. I started this health journey to become a health coach. Heather's husband had posted on LinkedIn that they were looking to grow their coaching practice and train new coaches. When I read that, something inside me lit up and I KNEW THIS WAS FOR ME! So, I reached out to them, we chatted about coaching, and then Heather said to me, "How's YOUR health?" UGGHHH!!!! Why did she have to ask that? Told her that I lost my breath walking short distances, was morbidly obese, and tired of trying things that just didn't work. She challenged me to try for two weeks one of the programs that she offered. I very hesitantly agreed and let's just say that was the beginning of the end. Ha! It was hard sharing my struggles with someone, I had NEVER done that. It was hard admitting that I just wanted to give up, over and over and over again. But Heather encouraged me to create a support system that included not only her, but others. That support system was KEY to my success.

I started my coaching practice in the Spring of 2019. I wasn't ready. I was still well over 200 pounds. And, I was exhausted from work. But, I followed my coach's advice and jumped in with both feet. IT WAS AMAZING! I learned so much more about myself and my health. The fire came back to my soul. And, I had the kind of success I could only dream of. It was all quite literally a life saving miracle. Coaching and the programs I am certified to coach, saved my life!

If you've been thinking about becoming a health coach, here are some things I've learned:

1. Pray over your decision to become a health coach and every decision associated with the business you are building. Build WITH God.

2. Find a mentor that has been successful in health coaching. Seasoned mentors are VITAL to the success of any entrepreneur.

3. Find a specific training or company that provides a training (like Optavia). This will help you in many ways, including identifying what type of health coach you want to be and business skills workshops.

4. Build Your Client Base  by first creating a contact list of people you know who are interested in improving their health. Share your personal story on social media to generate interest. And, introduce your contacts to your mission.

There will soon be another blog posting about setting up your business as an entrepreneur that will help with this list, as this is just a barebones description.

I would love to hear from you if you want to know more about my coaching journey or if you're interested in joining my team!
