Beat Your Goals

Journaling is an evidence-based tool for goal attainment, helping individuals clarify ambitions, create action plans, track progress, and stay motivated. Research from a Dominican University study suggests that writing down goals can make you up to 42% more likely to achieve them.

The Question is - How serious are you about getting healthy? Obtaining financial freedom? How serious are you about LIVING for your children? To get a free digital copy of my 30 day Faith & Prayer Journal, click here.

How journaling promotes goal attainment

1. Clarifies intentions

  • Makes goals tangible: Writing down vague aspirations forces you to define them clearly, transforming abstract thoughts into concrete objectives.

  • Connects to your "why": Journaling helps you explore the deep motivations behind your goals. Understanding this purpose creates a stronger, more emotional connection to your mission, helping you stay committed through challenges.

2. Facilitates strategic planning

  • Breaks down large goals: Use your journal to map out a long-term goal by breaking it into smaller, manageable milestones. This makes the overall task less daunting and provides a clear path forward.

  • Creates accountability: A journal serves as a written commitment to yourself. The act of regularly recording your progress, or lack thereof, can be a powerful motivator to stay on track.

3. Tracks progress and analyzes setbacks

  • Provides a progress log: Use a tracker within your journal to monitor habits and actions related to your goals. Reviewing past entries allows you to see how far you've come.

  • Helps overcome obstacles: By reflecting on challenges in your journal, you can gain a deeper understanding of what is holding you back. This process allows you to analyze setbacks, reframe negative thinking, and develop new strategies.

4. Boosts motivation and confidence

  • Visualizes success: Incorporating visual elements like drawings or vision boards can make your goals feel more real and reinforce your motivation.

  • Encourages celebration: Documenting and celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how small, boosts morale and reinforces your belief in your capabilities.

  • Reinforces positive mindset: Gratitude journaling, especially when you feel discouraged, can help shift your perspective and remind you of the positive aspects of your life and journey.

Structured techniques for goal journaling

1. The SMART framework
Write your goals using the SMART criteria to ensure they are:

  • Specific: Clearly state what you want to achieve.

  • Measurable: Define concrete metrics to track your progress.

  • Achievable: Break down large goals into small, realistic steps.

  • Relevant: Ensure your goals align with your overall values.

  • Time-bound: Set a specific deadline.

2. Daily, weekly, and monthly check-ins
Establish a routine to review and adjust your strategy.

  • Daily: Log three steps you will take to move your goal forward.

  • Weekly: Reflect on your progress, celebrate wins, and review any challenges.

  • Monthly: Assess your bigger-picture progress and make adjustments to your long-term plan.

3. Free writing
If you are unsure of your goals, use free writing to explore your aspirations. Write continuously for a set time, letting your thoughts flow onto the page without judgment. Afterwards, review your writing to identify patterns and potential goals.

4. The "why" statement
Use your journal to write and revisit a clear statement that articulates the core reason and purpose behind your goal. Regularly focusing on your "why" helps maintain motivation when faced with difficulties.
